RCC Pipe Classes Explained: Choosing Between NP2, NP3 and NP4

Choosing between RCC pipe classes is an important step in planning a drainage or infrastructure project. NP2, NP3 and NP4 pipes serve different design requirements, so the class specified for a project should match its engineering design, installation conditions and approved drawings.

What do NP2, NP3 and NP4 mean?

NP2, NP3 and NP4 are class designations used for reinforced concrete pipes. They help identify products for different service and design requirements. The label alone does not confirm that a pipe suits a particular site. Always check the applicable standard and revision, pipe diameter, loading criteria, joint details and testing documentation with the project engineer and supplier.

How to choose an RCC pipe

Review the expected loads and cover, soil and groundwater conditions, trench width, bedding and support design, alignment, flow needs and installation method. A pipe beneath a road may have different project requirements from one in a utility corridor. The approved drawings and tender specification should identify the class and dimensions. If the requirement is unclear, request written clarification before ordering.

Coordinate the pipe diameter and length with adjoining chambers, manholes and drainage structures. Check joint type and connection details as well as the nominal size. This helps avoid site changes when installation begins.

Installation matters too

Follow the approved lifting, storage and installation procedure. Prepare the trench and bedding to the design, maintain line and level, and install joints as specified. Backfill in the required sequence and compaction layers. Have the site engineer check alignment and connections before they are covered.
