Manholes provide access to underground utility and drainage networks for inspection and maintenance. A precast manhole system uses concrete components manufactured before delivery to the site. The required configuration depends on the network layout, depth, connections and governing project specification.
Start with the network design
Identify the service carried by the manhole, its location in the network, incoming and outgoing pipe sizes, required invert levels and depth from finished surface to the base. The design should also show the access opening, cover and frame, channel details where applicable, and connection or sealing requirements.
Confirm whether the design calls for a shallow inspection chamber or a deeper structure and which components are needed. The engineer’s drawings and authority requirements should determine the final arrangement. Do not select components on nominal diameter alone.
What to check before ordering
Confirm the applicable standard and revision, component dimensions, joint type, pipe-entry details, lifting and handling provisions, cover and frame requirements, and any acceptance documentation. Check that delivery vehicles can reach the site and that the lifting equipment and working area suit the units.
During installation, prepare the base to the approved detail, place components in the specified sequence, align connections and seal joints as designed. Check levels and pipe positions before backfilling. The site engineer should verify that the assembled structure matches the approved drawings and remains accessible.
Plan for operation and maintenance
Manhole position and access affect future inspection. Coordinate the finished cover level with the road, footpath or surrounding ground. Keep the structure accessible to maintenance crews and consider traffic, nearby utilities and surface drainage when confirming its location.
